Angels looking for bat, target third baseman

Even after rookie closer Jordan Walden blew his major-league leading seventh save Monday night, the Angels' top priority is to add a bat this week before the trade deadline, according to CBSSports.com sources, preferably a third baseman.

The Cubs' Aramis Ramirez and the Twins' Michael Cuddyer are two of the players the Angels have discussed internally, according to sources, but neither seems likely at this point early in the week.

Ramirez so far has indicated an unwillingness to waive his blanket no-trade clause.

As for the versatile Cuddyer -- whose limited no-trade clause involves only three clubs, none of them Los Angeles -- the Angels have considered taking a run at him and plugging him in at third base. But Minnesota so far refuses to concede in a tepid AL Central.

Sources with knowledge of the Twins' maneuverings say they remain in go-for-it mode and are casting a wide net for available relief pitchers to add to Joe Nathan and Matt Capps at the back end of their bullpen.

The Twins, after getting blown out 20-6 in Texas on Monday in a game in which Cuddyer became the first position player to pitch for them since 1990, are fourth in the division behind Detroit, Cleveland and Chicago -- but only seven games out.

Without Kendrys Morales this summer, and with age appearing to chip away at Vernon Wells, Torii Hunter and Bobby Abreu, the Angels rank 11th in the American League in runs scored, and 10th in both slugging and on-base percentage. They're second in the AL West, four games behind Texas heading into Tuesday night's games.

dltrey305, here's an old post of mine (my crystal ball wasn't so good about him taking the mound the other night, though):

Oft-injured Twins have 'limited' options with C...

Keep Cuddy! Seriously, this guy saved their playoff run last year when Morneau went down. He is a hell of a hard worker and will do anything for the team.  He is a clubhouse leader.  I'd honestly rather see Mauer or Morneau go before him. He's not going to wow anyone statistically, but they need a guy that will play damn near any position (except pitcher, catcher and shortstop...mercifully) and still bring a decent bat to the plate.

Keep dreaming, Michael Cuddyer is not going anywhere.  Who cares if they discussed it internally. That is about as far as it will go.  The Twins are not out of the race by any means.  Why would they trade away the teams MVP this season?  Also saying Cuddyer is average at best in the outfield is a joke.  The guy has a rocket for an arm.  He may not track a ball like Ben Revere, but, who does?  Phillies think they are getting him as well. It will not happen.

Maybe they could persuade Troy Glaus to get off the couch and back in the game? He has the punch they're looking for.
All it takes is a phone call, you never know.

Man....I could definitely use Cuddy at 3rd while A-rod is out. That would be great!!!

Why don't you take Figgins back from seattle. I'd say you could get him for a ptbnl.

The Angels need to rebuild not trade away youth. Aramis Ramirez is one of the streakest hitters in baseball. He just finished a hot streak so the Cubs are praying some one takes him now. Michael Cuddyer is now 32 and a utility man or average OF at best. Neither of these two players will make the Angels better then the Rangers. The Angels should be selling now as Wells, Hunter and Abreu could help some contending teams and give the angels some youth.

I am a big Twins fan and hated to see Torii Hunter leave but to the Angels wasn't all that bad so I am guessing if Cuddy does leave
he won"t go to Detroit or Cleveland or Chicago. Cuddyer can play any position on the field except catching . He even pitched 2 days ago
and gave up no runs in the 20 - 6 drubbing from the rangers . At this time he is the best player on the team and has a no trade clause which may keep him their . I would be even willing to give up Moreanu and Mauer before giving up on Cuddyer . I was at white sox park on the day he made his debut, I seen him throw out a player from right field to home plate I said who is this guy ,he sure has an arm . If they trade him I hope they get something we can use .
