Cardinals refuse to be written off ... again

Posted on: October 3, 2011 12:02 am
PHILADELPHIA -- This is a trick, isn't it? The way the St. Louis Cardinals are setting this up, it looks suspiciously as if it might be a referendum on how smart the rest of us are.

We wrote them off once, back in early September when they were 8 1/2 games out of a playoff spot.

You and the Atlanta Braves know what happened after that.

Now, after they blew an early lead in Game 1 of this Division Series and then fell behind by four runs against Cliff Lee in the second inning of Game 2, yes, just when it looked as if it was safe to write them off again ... BAM!

The Cardinals undressed Lee, a tag-team of six relievers redeemed Chris Carpenter's awful start and Tony LaRussa's gang swiped one from the Phillies, 5-4.

This was a game made for LaRussa. He used four different pitchers in the eighth inning alone. And it worked.

The Cardinals have to feel great about this one, and not just because of the win. But because of how they earned that win.

Rafael Furcal chopped a leadoff triple in the first ... but his teammates failed to score him.

David Freese drilled a leadoff double in the second ... and never moved as St. Louis blew another early opportunity against Lee.

St. Louis was 0 for 6 alone in the first two innings with runners in scoring position. And Carpenter was so off that LaRussa ripped plate umpire Jerry Meals during his mid-game television interview for having two different strike zones for Carpenter and Lee. Blatently untrue.

But somehow, Phillies mustered just two baserunners against the not-so-vaunted Cardinals' bullpen over the last five innings. The Cardinals drove Lee from the game in the seventh.

And they drove this series back to St. Louis even.

Cardinals refuse to be written off ... again

very true although the games should be reversed because in game 1 we were wining but we blew it and in game 2 you were winning and we blew it but I think the cards have the confidence from their wins momentum from taking 1 almost taking 2 in Philly and our fan base will be just as big of part of it as Phillies was if not more into it I look for a game 3 to go to the Cardinals and if Oswolt can make game 4 happen then good for him if not your gonna need luck on your side. Just as the Cardinals have had this whole past month. you all came into this series expecting to blow us out, we came into the series expecting to put up a fight and happy to just be in the playoffs you all are getting over cocky as I have witnessed in the game comments. We are biting our nails and screaming everytime we do good. We are more focused because we have nothing to lose after making a huge come back, after all well have Wainwright back next year, and this may be your last shot at what you want you all need to focus about us not worrying about what the Brewers offense is doing when ours is the best in the whole NL you haven't beat us yet so good luck.  11 in '11 GO CARDS

Cardinals refuse to be written off ... again

Isn't the post season fun!  This is what it's all about.  I bet the next two games at Busch are going to be close games...which should be a ton of fun.  The best team in baseball versus the hottest team in baseball.  You just can't make this stuff up.  Cardinal fans, you shouldn't be so high on your horse.  We've won one game.  We have to win 2 more.  All I know is I will be enjoying the ride no matter what happens!  Look, LaRussa shouldn't have said anything on TV about the strike zone and Philly fans shouldn't have cheered a pitch that almost hit someone in the head.  We'll call it even.  Just like the Series.

It's sad to see Phillies fans flaunting what dignity they do have, and forget to neglect the fact they are lucky game one ended the way it did, sure out pitching fell apart but did you see the way we man handled your "star" bulpen after Halliday was removed, lets stop being such poor sports eh Phillies fans, at least represent Philly well not making everyone who sees your bludgerent comments want to hate Philly because of the fact that you realize whats about to happen, facing Garcia who has dominated your team all year and dominated at home coming up next game and your "star" cant pitch until game four, and even then we get to face cliff again, please instead of badering and picking at us saying were so terrible go look at how your team isnt so protected against our NUMBER ONE NL OFFENSE. and how Halliday seemed to be the only reason you wont game one. So take a step back look at the big picture looks like 11 in '11 to me not a Phillies V. Yankees, also just imagine if we had Wainwright this year you would most deffinately be down 2-0 right now so we don't wanna hear your bs.

Cliff Lee....over rated!!! He can't win for losing. I never understood what that means exactly, but seeing as how Lee never recovered from getting owned by the Giants in last season's playoffs I think this statement fits him to a "T". I know Hamels will regress to his usual medicore self. Roy OSwalt has never done well when the pressure is on. Lest we forget what happened when Oswalt last pitched in the playoffs.

"you should start rooting for the rams, oh nevermind they suck ass too"

Thats a low blow, why you bring the Rams into this.  They work hard to be only team worse than the Eagles

not a big deal the phils lost, most have them winning in 4 anyway, but the way they lost won't sit well. They  jumped out the gate early chased Carp and  got the cards pen in there but couldn't do squat. Lee getting a 4-0 lead and then getting knocked around and the phils doing nothing against the cards pen is not a good sigh no matter how you spin it. Good thing is that was not an elimination game for the phils. The Bottom of the line up has got to do something, anything to help this team out. Big test for cole coming up and I'd like to see him come up Big in a Big playoff game.
