That contract the Phillies were discussing with Ryan Madson, the one that was rich enough to perhaps set the bar for Jonathan Papelbon and others this winter?
It might have been too lucrative for the Phillies' own good.
The deal currently is in flux -- with Philadelphia ownership hitting the pause button, according to sources with knowledge of the discussions.
Whether it or not it gets put back on track -- today or in the near future -- now will be the subject of great interest.
Madson and the Phillies on Tuesday were discussing a four-year deal worth $44 million, according to sources with knowledge of the talks, with a fifth year option worth another $13 million. The deal, negotiated between Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. and agent Scott Boras, was said to be reaching its final stages -- offered, and accepted. Then it went upstairs to Phillies' CEO David Montgomery, and the club hit the brakes.
This doesn't necessarily mean the Phillies will not sign Madson, who converted 32 of 34 save opportunities in 2011. But it does mean that if they've got pause on the price tag -- a price they initially appeared to be OK with -- they might decide to in a different direction -- Papelbon? Heath Bell? -- before what has turned into a highly curious negotiation finishes.
Madson, 31, compiled a 2.37 ERA in his first full-time season as a closer, with 62 strikeouts over 60 2/3 innings.

Phillies backing away from Madson deal?There go the Phillies trying to but another pitching staff. Too bad born-loser Dic Halladay didn't have Carpenter's guts and too bad Oswalt and Lee (2 more bought pitchers) performed like the Marys they really are. Keep spending Phillies and maybe, just maybe, you can get out of the first round this year.

Phillies backing away from Madson deal?Amaro is an idiot. Great, he assembled an amazing starting pitching staff (by spending a ton of money) and put a coach in place who doesnt know how to use it. Spending 11 million a year on Madson would be ludicrous. He has one year as a closer, and struggled in that role in limited opportunity in prior years. 7-8/year for 4 would be a big contract, and I doubt many teams would be lining up to give him that much. The Phillies need to worry about their lineup more than overpaying a closer. If they do this deal it will just be more proof the only thing Amaro is good at is spending money. Nice to see Montgomery might finally be figuring that out. |

Phillies backing away from Madson deal?I like Ryan Madson, but would rather see them sign Papelbon for that amount of money. And I sure hope that they don't let the guy from Minnesota get away so we can have a 3rd baseman that will stay healthy for the entire season and that can hit on a consistant basis.

Phillies backing away from Madson deal?You know what the REAL holdup in this deal is, don't you? The holdup is with the Phils' insistence on a clause giving them the right to void the contract if Madson ever uses a chair for any purpose other than to sit on. |

Phillies backing away from Madson deal?first of all i told everyone in the gameboards during the year that madson was going to demand 12 mill for about 5 years on the market. thats pretty much right what this is. first i said i dont wanna sign him for that and would much rather throw bastardo in there. but after the poor ending to the season that looks like a bad move now. Madson is the best reliever on the market this year and most consistent for sure. he has been great for 5 years now. he was the best setup man in the league the last 2 years and was one of the best closers int he league this year. with our inconsistant and sometimes useless lineup we are gonna have alot of close games that will need to be won and madson is the right guy to get the job done for us. everyone on the team would rather see madson there then anyone else and madson is the best choice out there. papelbon use to be one of the best but no longer is. he will get the same as this contract if not more. second. for anyone who wants to see rollins back for what hes gonna demand then you need to rethink that. it will take around 4/50 or more to get rollins and we need to really rechange this offense this offseason. rollins will be gone and they will get cuddyer for much less then what rollins is demanding. then they will figure something out with SS. i hope they dont pay rollins money to play "great defense" because they can get other people to play defense good enough defense that will save them huge amounts of money to really upgrade this offense in what is lacking and that is getting on base. rollins isnt a leadoff hitter and hasnt been for a long time and we need to find someone that can actually do that or maybe just plug shane in there. promote galvis and sign a veteran to compete with him and make him better. and to make him think its not his job just yet. also we can plug mayberry in left and maybe sign a cheap veteran leftfielder that bats lefthanded so mayberry wont get too comfortable thinking he is the everyday guy, it will keep him going and trying hard everytime out there. |

Phillies backing away from Madson deal?Is it possible that Scott Boras released information to the media in an attempt to force the Phillies hand, and that the Phillies just are not allowing Boras to manipulate them? For the Phillies to wrap that much money up in a guy who at the start of the 2011 season was not supposed to be the closer would be a head-scratcher. Boras leaked the information to people in the media that will fed on anything he throws out there, and they ran with it. The Phillies probably backed away because of Boras leaking the information. There is nothing wrong with taking the time to explore other options, although, I believe the only other option out there is Papelbon. Ultimately, I believe the Phillies will resign Madson, but I do not believe it will be for the number that Boras has put out to the media.
