Why can't I add more favorites?

April 26, 2012 10:01 am

Instead of code we cook a mean yak stew
Yak stew.  It doesn't get any better.  That's living large.

Day 787.

Has there been any official explanation as to how this Herculian effort (raising the limit from 150 to, what, 250) was accomplished?  It must have been something along the lines of the Manhattan Project, right?  I mean, it took not days, weeks or months to pull it off, but years!

That alone tells you it had to be big, Big, BIG.

You are exactly right, Lil.   The design was untested and many worried it might set the internets on fire.  The painstaking work on miles of centrifuges to separate enough delicate code elements to make the kernel, the tricky compression scheme to squeeze it, the triggers that had to be simultaneous, the initiator to start the sequence, and the tamping to absorb stray admin neurons all had to work the first time.

Sadly. I think someone died during the development.  Then there was the gruesome fiasco with the sharks, after the ship that delivered the gadget sank but it was so secret no one knew where they were.  Then later, a few inside spys gave the design to ESPN and Yahoo and saved them several years of hard work.  Last, of course, the head guy who worked so tirelessly to get it done was backstabbed by a jealous colleague, his clearance was pulled and he never worked on important stuff ever again.

Ever since, they've been trying to keep it out of terrorist hands and buying up all the code elements that sit unsecured around the world.  big, Big, BIG indeed.   Think what might happen if Iran gets the working code?   Then there is Pakistan...  where all the outsourced customer service agents are!    Soooooooo close to......    Katmandu.

On this date in 1986 the reactor in Chernobyl exploded in one of the worst nuclear disasters of all time.

Day 787, the favorites limit is keeping good company.

Which means, of course, that all the other talk by the admins about 'fighting to get the limit raised' was a load of crap.

It most certainly was not. They were able to add an additional 100, they weren't in the past.

...slowing down the database and page loading times...

Add to that...
  • no longer saving reputation components like connections, participation or value,
  • no longer indexing and computing individual scores,
  • no longer updating those graphs and imbedded items on the pages,
  • no longer computing each post score or saving that data,
  • no longer computing overall thread "value" from posts,
  • no longer sorting threads by "value"
...and I'd say there would be plenty of resources to handle favorites.  And have fast page loads.

I think they can easily change the number to a greater number than 250, it's a change in the code.. the BS they fed us about slowing down the database and page loading times, is just that... after they limited the fav's, I didn't see a increase in speed..

That would be because any increase in page load speed gained by limiting favorites was counteracted by the constant need to run the subroutines managing favorites.

The Remington 788 is an inexpensive yet accurate hunting rifle developed by the Remington Arms Company to compete with other gun companies' less expensive rifles and marketed alongside their more expensive Model 700 line. The 788 utilizes a single-column detachable magazine holding 3 rounds. A .22 rimfire model was also produced known as the 580, 581, or 582 depending on its method of feed. A target version of the .22 caliber 58x series, the 540X, was used by the US Military[1] as a training rifle and later disposed through the Civilian Marksmanship Program.

Overview

The distinguishing feature of the 788 is its rear-lugged bolt. The bolt has 9 lugs in three rows of three lugs each. They lock into the receiver behind the magazine well. Because of this design, the bolt handle lifts only 60 degrees on opening giving more clearance for scopes compared to the 90 degrees required for the Model 700 and other two-lugged bolts. The bolt travel is also reduced because of the rear lugs. The receiver also has a small ejection port and no bolt lug raceways, making the receiver stiffer than a Remington 700, although it is the same outside diameter.

The 788 was made in many calibers up to the length of the 6 mm Remington. Magazines in this caliber are extremely rare. Most common calibers encountered are .308 and .243, but less common bolt-action calibers are available such as .222 .30-30 Winchester and .44 magnum.[2] These rifles differed slightly in the design of the magazine and the bolt. The front of these bolts did not rotate.

Remington made extensive use of 'screw-machines' in the manufacture of this rifle. The 788 was discontinued in the 1980s. In its used form, the 788 retains a cult following for its accuracy, despite several serious design flaws. Such as the safety, it is notorious for slipping up and making the firearm unfit for safe use. Because this rifle is no longer in production, replacement parts and expensive and difficult to find. The Remington 700 is still in production and is used (with variants) as a military sniper rifle. [3][4][5] [6]

April 27th, 1989   Protesting students take over Tiananmen Square in Beijing, China.

Day 788.  Famous image of a lone student standing in front of a huge and formidable tank cannon barrel.   How'd that work out again?

Any... (read and enjoy the Katmandu Post) Day.. Now.

April 28th, 1789 -  The crew of the HMS Bounty mutinies against Captain William Bligh.

Day 789.  Cruel treatment makes men do what they must.  They sailed to Pitcairn Island, married natives and ended up very much closer than we are to Katmandu.  The Shangri-la for the out of touch.

I think I might start calling ozzier "Mr. Manhattan Project."  Nope, just Manhattan.

Much punchier, don't you think?

Kat Man(hattan) Du ?

Being the J.Robert Oppenheimer of the CBS Manhattan project is double-edged.  He would need to speak sanskrit (or some archane coding language), read the Bagavageta (or an alternate sacred tome) and be wary of being backstabbed by whomever is the Edward Teller of admins (pushing for bigger bombs than the limits fiasco).

Repeat after me:  "I have become death, the destroyer of worlds."   Stay away from Alamagordo, NM...  and headquarters.
