Islanders prospects and Niagara IceDogs teammates Ryan Strome and Mitchell Theoret spoke with islanders.com about playing in the 2012 OHL Championships, beginning Thursday, May 3.

Ryan Strome Q&A

Islanders.com: How would you evaluate your performance so far in the OHL Playoffs?
Ryan Strome: We’ve had some tough competition in the first three rounds – I think we’ve played maybe the three toughest teams in the Eastern Conference – so I think we’re well prepared. For myself, I’ve done pretty well offensively and I’ve been producing and I have to try to keep it up and keep making strides because London is a really good defensive team.

Islanders.com: Can you preview your upcoming series against the Knights? What do you expect from them?
Ryan Strome: They have a world class goalie – he’s one of the best goalies in the league along with ours. They also have a really good group of forwards with a lot of depth and a few studs on defense. It’s going to be a really tough series. I think our teams match up very evenly.

Islanders.com: Is this the furthest you’ve ever gone into the Playoffs? What would a Memorial Cup birth mean to you and your team.
Ryan Strome: Last year we lost in the third round so to improve on that this year was a goal of mine and it’s good that we accomplished that. Anything from here is an added bonus. We obviously aren’t satisfied yet and we have our sites set on the Memorial Cup but we have to take care of business in the OHL Championship first.

Islanders.com: Have you been in touch with any Islanders during the season or playoffs? Gotten any good advice?
Ryan Strome: A bunch of them have been in contact with me and given me support. Especially at the World Juniors and I went to a game in Toronto and they were all asking about my season. They’ve been really good and really helpful. I’m looking forward to finishing off the year here and then getting back to New York.

Islanders.com: How did attending your first NHL training camp and spending the first few weeks of the season with the Islanders affect you as a player?
Ryan Strome: I think it’s been very beneficial. I learned a lot. I was watching and learning as much as I could about the older guys about what it takes to be a professional and I tried to adopt as much as I could from there to come back to junior and be a leader and try to play the game properly at both ends of the ice. I’m very thankful for that opportunity I had to stay there.

Islanders.com:  How would you describe Theoret's game and how has his season gone?
Ryan Strome: He’s a big-bodied player who’s been a little bit streaky this year, but when he’s hot, he’s hot. He was huge for us this last series and when he uses his body to get in front of the net he’s very successful. He and I have found some chemistry when we’ve played together.

Islanders.com:  How would you evaluate the team’s play and your individual performance so far in the OHL Playoffs?
Mitchell Theoret: I think we’ve lived up to the expectations as a team. We set our goal to win the OHL championship and the Memorial Cup and everything so far has been a stepping stone towards that. As for myself, I think I’ve done a reasonable job – I’d like to produce more offensively, but as long as the team’s winning and I’m contributing to the success I’m happy with that.

Islanders.com:  You had three big goals in your last series against the Ottawa 67’s. What clicked for you and your line?
Mitchell Theoret:  I think we just came together more as a line. I hadn’t played with Shiply and Pecan at all in the playoffs. We just seemed to find some chemistry and it seemed to work for us.

Islanders.com:  Can you preview your upcoming series against the London Knights?
Mitchell Theoret: They’re a lot different from Ottawa. Ottawa played physical, which is how I like to play, but London has a lot more high-end talent and a lot more speed, so I think we’re going to have to be ready to make decisions quicker and we’re not going to have a lot of time.
 
Islanders.com:  How did attending your first NHL training camp effect your season?
Mitchell Theoret: It was a great experience coming down. It really opened my eyes about what the NHL and the Islanders organization are all about a. It’s motivated me to want to work extra hard to achieve that goal of playing for the Islanders.

Islanders.com:  How would you describe Strome’s play this season and post season?
Mitchell Theoret: He’s been lights out all season. He came back from New York after missing the first few games and dominated the league again like he did last year. The sky is the limit for him.

2012 IIHF World Championship Okposo Scores Twice As USA Defeats France 7-2
 
USA 7, FRANCE 2

Kyle Okposo scored two goals, Max Pacioretty scored one and picked up two assists and Alex Goligoski had two points as Team USA defeated France 7-2 Friday in Helsinki.

Tavares Scores, Assists in 4-2 Win
CANADA 4, SWITZERLAND 2


John Tavares scored Team Canada's first goal and assisted on the game-winner en route to a 4-2 victory over Switzerland Tuesday in Canada's final exhibition game prior to the 2012 IIHF World Championship.

Tavares and Andrew Ladd gave Canada a 2-0 lead before Roman Wick and Damien Brunner replied for the Swiss on the power play in the second.

Sharp snapped the 2-2 tie and then picked up an assist on Jeff Skinner's empty-net goal to seal the victory.

Cam Ward started and picked up the win for Canada, which opens the tournament against Slovakia on Friday in Helsinki, Finland.

The forward line of Tavares, Skinner and Sharp combined for seven points. Tavares was named the player of the game.

Shockingly, the blue chip draft pick Kirill Petrov is going to stay in Russia so he doesnt have to play for the Islanders. Shocker. Great draft pick by Garth.

Petrov was a 3rd round gamble..... S happens! I prefer Kabanov anyway. I know all of Pitts Draft Picks are all stellar!

Petrov was never a blue chip.. He was a low risk 3rd round draft pick.

Even more of a shocker????? The Penguins bowing out in the 1st round of the Playoffs.

I swear that you have a "thing" for ole Garth Snow.  Did he rub you the wrong way or something? Hmmmmm. Why you continue to harp on a GM who clearly has financial restraints is beyond me.
Face it... You root for a team that was absolute trash not too long ago. They happened to stink bad enough to land Sid, Geno, MAF , Staal, etc. You put these players on any NHL team, that team will win... No doubt about it.
Unfortunately for you the Pens will probably have to trade a piece or two of their core to maintain their  success. Their salaries together would not allow them to carry solid 3rd or 4th line players or a deep defense unless they have a solid pool of kids at WBS.

A record likely NEVER to broken. We had some incredible Organization/Franchise back then. How I miss those GLORY DAYS........

I fetched this from TSN.

A couple of Michal Rozsival, Carlo Colaiacovo, Bryan Allen, Shane O'Brien, Cory Sarich or Greg Zanon would be better than what the Islanders are losing to unrestricted free agency and could make life easier for the goaltenders.

Certainly the Islanders can upgrade the position long-term with the fourth overall pick in the draft. If an elite forward falls in their lap, the Islanders can go in that direction, but in a defence-rich draft, there is an opportunity to add someone dynamic like Matthew Dumba or safe and steady like Ryan Murray.

The Ontario Hockey League has been one of the premier pipelines for NHL development over the past couple of decades, particularly down the middle of the ice. From Eric Lindros to Joe Thornton, and more recently, Mike Richards, Ryan Getzlaf, and surging second-year center Tyler Seguin, the league has produced countless blue chip NHL centermen.

The top 10 centers from the OHL this year, naturally, feature a lot of offensive potential, but are also well-rounded players that should all likely see time in an NHL uniform in the future.


1. Ryan Strome, Niagara IceDogs

Drafted 1st round, 5th overall, 2011

Ryan Strome had a coming-out party for Niagara in 2010-11 in which he eclipsed 100 points in 65 games to lead the team in scoring. His offensive production was more than enough to warrant the Islanders selecting him fifth overall, but it's his complete skill set that's going to make him a nice complement to John Tavares within the next year or two.

This year, Strome seemed to prove there's not much more he could learn in junior. In just 46 games, the Mississauga native scored 30 goals and added 38 assists. He was also plus-37 on the talent-laden team. Though he only finished fifth in team scoring due to playing just 46 games, he was consistently the most dangerous forward on the IceDogs all season. That's carried into the playoffs, where he currently leads the team in scoring with 23 points in 17 games.

The same can be said during the World Juniors. Part of the reason Strome missed so many games was due to his selection for the Canadian World Junior Team, in which he finished sixth in scoring for the tournament with nine points in five games, tied with Mark Stone (OTT) for the team lead.

Strome is eligible to return to Niagara next season, but should have a fairly good shot at making the Islanders. There's not much more he has to prove at the junior level.
